Innovation and Commercialization Office Programs

The Innovation and Commercialization (I&C) Office helps a diverse pool of extramural academic and small business innovators accelerate the transition of their new and promising discoveries into biomedical products that prevent, diagnose, and treat heart, lung, blood, and sleep diseases and disorders. I&C provides pre-application advice to innovators, offers product development support during funding periods, and helps identify potential federal and private sector partners that may support further technology development.

I&C coordinates and serves as a central point of contact for the NHLBI Small Business Program, which includes Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) activities. I&C also contributes to collaborative projects and initiatives that support innovators and lends its expertise to other NHLBI and NIH programs that work with them.

Applicant Services

Potential applicants for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funding receive guidance on their funding proposals and answers to application questions.

The Innovator to Entrepreneur Program (ITEP) provides cohort-based training to aspiring entrepreneurs needing assistance in areas of company launch, business strategy development, finance discovery, IP protection, market research and company discovery. Innovators who have not been awarded an SBIR/STTR award may apply to participate in ITEP, which is supported by NHLBI and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

NHLBI Small Business Program (SBIR/STTR)

The NHLBI is interested in SBIR/STTR activities that advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. Early (Phase I) and later (Phase II) stage grants are available, as well as targeted opportunities (Phase IIB) to support small market technologies and those preparing for commercialization:

SBIR/STTR Phase I and Phase II Grants (with and without clinical trials) are available through the Omnibus Solicitations listed here:

NHLBI also offers competing renewal Phase IIB SBIR awards, which help previously funded Phase II SBIR/STTR awardees meet regulatory milestones and connect with investors/strategic partners:
